ΔU=Q-W: Thermo Dynamism

Thermo Dynamism is an installation designed to showcase the "connection of scholarship" that occurs at the Georgia Tech library. The project was developed as a pre-visualization for the Interactive Media Zone, a video wall currently in development.

As a team of three, we began by considering the nature of connection and scholarship and how we could visually depict it. We noticed that scholarship and creation share many characteristics with the cycles of organic energy, from the way a storm feeds energy into itself to the way a tree's root system shares resources with other trees. We also drew inspiration from the First Law of Thermodynamics, which expresses that change in thermal energy equals heat added minus the work done by the system.

The Thermo Dynamism installation incorporates 5 windows, each offering a unique, interactive view into a stage of the cycle of innovation. Motion tracking cameras are used to detect viewers in front of the windows, triggering interactive visual effects. Additionally, a parallax effect is triggered when viewers move from side to side, creating the illusion of a three-dimensional space.

My primary role in the team included creating the animations and interactive effects in TouchDesigner and MaxMSP, as well as leading concept design and experience design.
