Preservation

Preservation is an abstract recontextualization of Charles Darwin's seminal text, On the Origin of Species. The project is software written in Processing and designed for display on the Georgia Tech Media Bridge. The code finds words within the book that reflect destruction and extinction of a species and is able to wipe out the page and destroy the text. However, words that suggest unity, love, and togetherness are preserved, highlighting the importance of these concepts in our society.

In a time of great change and technological advancement, such as in the field of AI, this project aims to make passersby stop and consider the bigger picture of humanity and our role in society. The changes that happen over long periods of time can be hard to see, but it's crucial that we consider the impact of our actions on the world around us. Through this abstract recontextualization, viewers are invited to reflect on the themes of destruction and unity, and consider how these concepts relate to our own lives. As they watch the text on the page being wiped out, they're reminded of the fragility of our world and the importance of working together to preserve it.
